While the Ancient Romans drank on New Year’s Eve, the tradition of sipping Champagne came from the French. Drinkers considered champagne to be fancier and more delicate than traditional wines, and it grew to become a mark of sophistication. Since champagne is associated with prosperity, it became the drink of choice for New Year’s Eve parties around the world.
