Switch Up Your Commute for Car Free Day in Baltimore
September 15, 2021Traveling by car can be convenient, but there are a lot of drawbacks: traffic, dangerous accidents, and the environmental impact, to name just a few. To reduce noise, pollution, and traffic for a day, World Car Free Day was founded to encourage participants to use alternative methods. It’s a fantastic opportunity to try a new way to travel, whether by boat, train, foot, or even scooter.
So, ditch the keys in favor of a new method of transportation on September 22nd for World Car Free Day! Here are a few of our favorite ways to travel around the city.
Baltimore Water Taxi
One of the very best ways to travel car-free is by boat. When you ride the Baltimore Water Taxi, you can enjoy scenic harbor views, take in the sea breeze, and travel to tons of destinations near and far. Talk about a relaxing commute! There’s a stop right here in Harbor East that’s easy to get to from your home at Liberty. It’s just a quick 7-minute ride across the harbor to Federal Hill. If you’re looking for more than just a mode of transportation, be sure to take advantage of their beautiful BYO sunset cruises and “Brews Cruises.”
Charm City Circulator
If you’ve never ridden the Charm City Circulator, Car Free Day is the perfect day for a bus adventure. It’s completely free, and it’s eco-friendly––these busses have zero emissions up to 40% of the time. The nearest stop is Stop 226, at Exeter and Fleet Streets, along the Orange Route. You can travel to the inner harbor and points east, so there’s plenty of amazing shopping, dining, and entertainment within the Circulator’s path.
Travel By Scooter
Indulge your inner child with a scooter ride! These aren’t the old-fashioned scooters of your childhood––they’re electric, so you can get pretty far without even breaking a sweat. Baltimore has both Spin and Lime scooters. Both scooters can be rented by downloading the respective mobile apps. From there, you just add money to your account, scan the scooter, and ride off! When you’ve arrived at your destination, simply park the scooter and use the app to “return” it.
Participate In a Bike Share
When was the last time you went for a bike ride? Chances are, it’s been too long! Biking is a wonderful way to take in our city’s scenery and get a workout in. If you don’t have a bike here in your apartment home, you can borrow one from a bike share. If you’d prefer an electric bike, you can rent a JUMP bike. The rental process is the same as the scooters––it’s super easy and convenient.
Take The Metro
Car Free Day is a great excuse to take a train trip to somewhere new. Shot Tower Station is less than a 15-minute walk away, and from there you can voyage to numerous destinations via train. You can get off at Penn Station to take another train wherever you like, or keep riding to go as far as Owing Mills in Baltimore County.
Go for a Walk
One of the many benefits of living in an urban area is walkability. There are so many amazing places to go that are within walking distance of your home here at Liberty Harbor East. Plus, walking is great for your physical and mental health. So, take advantage of this beautiful early autumn weather and take a walk!
Enjoy the Journey
However you travel, we hope you enjoy the journey! If you participate in Car Free Day, don’t forget to take a photo of your trip and tag us @LibertyHarborEast!
