Make a Difference in Baltimore this Giving Tuesday and Beyond
November 18, 2022Giving Tuesday is exactly what the name suggests — a day to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Every individual has the chance to make a difference and bring positivity into the world, and Giving Tuesday focuses on how radical and individual generosity can create change. There are numerous ways to get involved in Giving Tuesday, from helping out neighbors to taking part in community events that give back.
Here are some ways to give back in Baltimore:
At Liberty
You don’t have to go far to celebrate Giving Tuesday when home right here at Liberty Harbor East is participating in a Friendsgiving that works towards Giving Tuesday’s Initiative to support two pillars of homelessness and housing. Partnering with Rebuilding Together Baltimore, there’s a wishlist that you can contribute to effectively combat homelessness and make a difference in Baltimore.
Support People Experiencing Homelessness
With a mission to combat homelessness, Back on My Feet utilizes fitness and community support to help individuals who are suffering from homelessness or addiction find their way to independence. You can volunteer your time to serve on the support team that helps members through Workforce Development, which include education and job training. Donations and fundraising are also accepted, with funds going towards career coaching, enrollment fees, materials, housing, and other resources to land a job.
The main goal of Health Care for the Homeless is to provide comprehensive healthcare and supportive services to those experiencing homelessness. Health care services range from medical care to behavioral and addiction services, while supportive services can include transportation or securing housing. All of these services combined help provide a holistic coverage that enables individuals to improve all aspects of their life so they can get back on their feet. Every donation made goes towards funding these services and helping those experiencing homelessness to have the safety and security every human deserves.
As the end of the year nears, there may be an increase in evictions that will strip people of from their homes. By donating to the Home for the Holidays campaign, you act as a donor to cover costs for helping to rehouse families and prevent homelessness for many others. Donations go towards providing meals, buying winter clothing for children, storage costs for families in transition, and moving costs for families. Help reduce homelessness and make a wave in the lives of many this Giving Tuesday.
Encourage Education
Reading is an important skill to have and to utilize. The Maryland Book Bank wants to encourage reading and literacy to children, regardless of if it is more classroom libraries, home libraries, or homeschooling resources. Every donation made during Giving Tuesday will go towards purchasing new books that will be provided to young and eager readers. Donors can also shop Maryland Book Bank’s Amazon wishlist to directly purchase items that will help improve the lives and reading skills of children throughout Maryland.
Living Classrooms’ goal is to provide access to more equitable education, workforce development, and other opportunities that enable individuals to thrive. Every donation made allows these beneficial and life changing programs to continue, as well as provides the resources needed for disadvantaged youth and adults to succeed.
Help the Environment
Consider donating to Blue Water Baltimore, whose mission is to restore the quality of Baltimore’s rivers, streams, and harbors for a cleaner environment. Blue Water focuses on reducing sewage waste, polluted stormwater runoff, toxic pollution, and litter. These goals are met through collaborating with residents, businesses, and more to work together for a successful change for Baltimore’s waterways. There are other ways to get involved, including volunteering to plant trees, clean up trash, lend a hand at the Nursery, or work as an advocate to make a change in your city.
Dedicated to improving the watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay, the Chesapeake Bay Trust prioritizes grants and special initiatives that help encourage students and volunteers in making a change. You can make a donation for Giving Tuesday that will go towards creating a greener, cleaner, and more eco-friendly environment for the Chesapeake Bay and its residents.
Support Pets
Pet lovers can unite to make a difference for rescues in Maryland. By donating to the MDSPCA, any money raised or donated will go towards paying for a variety of health care essentials such as vaccinations and medications, emergency surgeries, food, shelter, and more for pets located in the SPCA. Give these rescues the love and help they need this Giving Tuesday to help ensure that they can thrive and remain healthy pets until they get adopted.
Founded to protect the region’s pets and to assist in ensuring their quality of life, Baltimore Humane Society offers a safe no-kill shelter for rescued animals with affordable spay, neuter, and other wellness services. You can donate for Giving Tuesday to help save pets in the Baltimore region and make sure they have access to food, vaccinations, examinations, and more. No matter how much you give, you can save the lives of animals in your community.
Provide Mental Health Counseling
There is a high need for mental health counselors, making Pro Bono Counseling a great campaign to donate to. Each donation will help to provide quality mental health care to those who would not otherwise have access to this care. Pro Bono Counseling focuses on the community on a personal level, ensuring that all residents of Maryland are receiving the help they need to thrive both as an individual and within their community.
Support People Who are Blind
National Federation of the Blind
By donating to the National Federation of the Blind, you can help blind people gain access to resources that can support and give Blind people the opportunity to succeed. Being a supporter of this National Federation helps to provide community and mentors for blind people across the country, braille and nonvisual instructions for children, advocacy for the rights of Blind Americans, and more. You can participate in their Winter Block Party, with free food, games, music, and more supporting a great cause.
