Black-Owned Businesses to Support This February
February 6, 2024February is full of opportunities to reflect and celebrate: it’s Black History Month and Valentine’s Day is on the 14th. This month––and every month––it’s important to give back to our loved ones, show support to our neighbors, and honor Black History in our city and beyond.
In this post, we wanted to highlight some amazing Black-owned businesses and restaurants. Among this list, you’re sure to find some inspiration for Valentine’s Day dates, Galentine’s surprises, or treats for yourself.
Shop Local, Share the Love
The best gifts are locally made. Shop these Black-owned businesses to give something special to your loved one while giving back to our community.
You can never go wrong with chocolate, but Jinji Chocolate is certainly a level up from your typical chocolate box. They combine complex flavors and masterful techniques, resulting in a unique confectionary experience. Jinji’s one-of-a-kind “Comeback Chocolate” is so good that you’ll surely come back for another bite!
Crust by Mack was created by Amanda Mack, starting as a pop-up concept but blossoming into a bakery mainstay in Baltimore. Their stuffed pies, buttermilk biscuits, cookies, and more are so popular they regularly sell out. The best part? Every purchase gives back, thanks to their partnership with CHUCG Black Yield.
Or, satisfy your lover’s sweet tooth with a box of gourmet chocolate-covered strawberries. Berries By Quicha makes the most extraordinary treats, including a selection of Valentine’s Day-themed chocolate strawberry boxes. It may be a “small” business, but business owner Quicha has worked with some big names including President Obama and Beyonce.
Treat your lover, BFF, or anyone you admire to a moment of luxury this February. Everyone appreciates flowers! Baltimore Blossoms Studio has been supplying the area with jaw-dropping bouquets since 2002. Or, liven up their space with a candle from KSM Candle Co. With over 80 scents to choose from, you can find something for anyone. Try finding a scent that connects to a special memory you share.
Gift your favorite budding sommelier to an extra-nice bottle from Off The Rox. Their team of beverage experts can help you guide your selection. Wine and cheese is a match made in heaven, so check out Urban Charcuterie, curated by talented cheese connoisseur Niccara Campbell.
Date Night in Baltimore
Support Baltimore Black entrepreneurship and impress your date with a night out at one of these spots.
Water for Chocolate’s Prix Fixe menu is perfect for a special occasion. It includes 4-6 courses of their very best dishes, from bayou-style nitro shrimp with parmesan grits to goat cheese Mac. Their list of “elixirs” features some creative cocktails, with holistic recipes and fresh ingredients.
If your loved ones love seafood, bring them to The Urban Oyster. It’s the first female, Black-owned oyster bar in the U.S., led by incredible Owner/Executive Chef Jasmine. Their spectacular raw bar is worth the visit alone, but don’t miss their entrees and side selection.
Teavolve is the ideal brunch date spot. We recommended the Red Velvet Pancakes for a festive Valentine’s Day brunch. For something savory, split a smoked salmon omelet, or the mini crab cake eggs Benedict…you can’t go wrong no matter what you order at this fabulous cafe.
For a true Charm City experience, don’t miss Magdalena. Their from-scratch bistro approach highlights Chesapeake Bay favorites. It’s the vision of Chef Scott Bacon, who combines his southern Black and British roots with his French culinary training. The result is something new yet nostalgic.
